Things to Do

Explore the Sea Caves

Bayfield is the gateway to 22 islands, 9 lighthouses, and the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. It offers some of the best kayaking anywhere in North America. Paddle through emerald waters while coasting through sandstone cathedral-like sea caves.

First-time paddlers are encouraged to join a guided expedition. Here are two options for ½ day guided tours. The AM start ½ day tours would bring you back to Bayfield in the early afternoon leaving plenty of time before our late afternoon/early evening ceremony. There is also option for a night tour. Apostle Island Rustic Makwa Den and Trek and Trail are two options for kayak tours.

For those who are not interested in kayaking, there are boat cruises that go for 2-3 hours that show you even more. They are scheduled at different times throughout the day and can be booked through Apostle Island Cruises

We would recommend booking for Friday afternoon, Saturday morning (10am) or Sunday morning cruise.

Visit Madeline Island

Madeline Island is the largest of the Apostle Islands . The island is accessible by ferry by foot, bike, or car. The ferry ride is 25 minutes to the island and runs every ½ hour (every 1 hour for low traffic times).

The Anishinaabe name for Madeline Island is Mooniinwanekaaning-minis, which translates to Home of the Yellow Breasted Woodpecker. Public signage on Madeline Island is bilingual, with place names written in both English and Anishinaabe. There is plenty to keep you occupied for a full day, or just a morning or afternoon. Downtown La Pointe offers many artist galleries, shopping and restaurants. The Madeline Island Museum and the Heritage Center are some indoor options. There are bike rentals, beaches, golf courses and trails as well.
